About The Ranstead Room
Behind an unmarked door in a Center City alley, marked only by a pair of red Rs, sits a low-lit room of tufted red booths and a bar running the length of one wall. It came out of Stephen Starr's group with a Milk & Honey lineage, and the drinks still lean that way: exact classics, an old fashioned over monogrammed ice, and a bartender's-choice option that reviewers keep ordering. Tuesday brings a tiki pop-up. The room holds only around 45, so from Thursday to Saturday, when it stays open until 2 AM, waits of 45 minutes are common and the door holds firm once it is full; a reservation helps. Candlelight, a small snack menu and a 1920s gentlemen's-club mood keep the focus on conversation. Doors open at 7 PM Monday to Saturday, and Sunday is dark. Reviews praise the bartenders by name, while a few describe brusque door staff on busy nights.
