About Double Knot
The ground floor on 13th Street reads as a small bar, but the real room is downstairs: a dark, low-ceilinged izakaya of timber tables, velvet banquettes, exposed brick and a tall back bar crowded with bottles, lit so low that a few reviewers complain they cannot see their food. The kitchen, part of Michael Schulson's group, runs a long menu of robata skewers, sushi and maki, crispy fried chicken, bao and edamame dumplings, with a tasting menu for those who plan ahead. It opens at 4 PM every day with happy-hour pricing and serves until 10 PM early in the week, 11 PM on Wednesday and Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Google reviewers rate it 4.6 across more than 2,800 reviews, calling the food creative and faithful to Japanese flavours and the design unlike anything else in the city. The recurring gripe is a cool reception at the host stand, which several diners contrast with warm service once seated.
