About Irwin's
A former classroom of the Bok vocational school holds the dining room: enormous school windows, worn cream walls, exposed conduit, old tile, palms and Persian rugs, with a terrace outside looking over South Philly toward the Center City skyline. The cooking is Sicilian, built around a house focaccia that reviewers rave about, bluefin tuna crudo, eggplant caponata, fritto misto and pastas such as mafaldine and rigatoni, with a $90-per-person chef's tasting that can finish on a whole fish. Dinner runs Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm to 9:30pm, reservations are recommended, and Google puts spending at $50–100 a head. The 4.4 from nearly 400 reviews is driven by anniversaries and birthdays that went smoothly; the recurring gripes are small portions for the price and a server pushing extra dishes. Street parking around the building is tight enough that one diner worried about towing. Many guests start with a drink at Bok Bar across the same floor.
