About Royal Peacock Lounge
Auburn Avenue's Royal Peacock began life in 1937 as the Top Hat Club and took its current name in the late 1940s under owner Carrie Cunningham, a former circus performer; decades later it appeared in Outkast's 'Rosa Parks' video. The marquee still hangs over the sidewalk, and the club now bills itself as the city's original reggae nightclub. Friday through Sunday from 10pm until 4am, the selection moves through reggae, dancehall, soca, Afrobeats, amapiano and calypso, with hip-hop and R&B mixed in, and the owners are blunt that it is a room for dancing rather than standing against the wall. A pool table sits off the floor, hookah is available and bottle service caters to birthday tables. Google lists it as Black-owned, and it carries a 4.6 from nearly 1,200 reviews, many of them naming bartenders such as Dev and Omar for fast, friendly service.
