About 89 Charles
A short flight of steps off Charles Street leads down to a basement room with a pressed gold ceiling, curved navy banquettes, small round tables and a marble bar lit by glass-shaded Deco lamps. The cocktail list is compact, with only three whiskey drinks on one recent visit, but bartenders will make classics such as a Boulevardier on request, and the martinis get their own mentions. Food runs to bar plates meant for sharing: warm olives, crispy potatoes in generous portions, blistered peppers, toasts and a warm cookie plate. Reviewers call it swanky rather than stuffy and single out friendly table service. Google rates it 4.1 from a small base of about 60 reviews and places it in the $20 to $50 band, well below the North End's tasting bars. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm to midnight, closed Sunday and Monday, and ranked fourth on Time Out's 2026 list.
