About Alebrije
Yellow chairs, pale wood tables and a mural spelling the name fill a small, bright room on Gallatin Avenue, with the kitchen open along one wall and a glowing script sign over the door. The short menu is careful Mexican cooking rather than a formal tasting: tacos of al pastor, carnitas, brisket and red snapper, potato and chorizo flautas, an al pastor huarache, mole enchiladas, charro beans and corn off the cob, with aguas frescas such as hibiscus-strawberry, cucumber-lime and horchata. It opens Wednesday evening, then Thursday to Sunday from noon, staying until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. A 4.8 from about 280 Google reviews reflects real devotion, with one family of six calling it the finest in town for just under $150, and children are welcome. The complaints are consistent too: long waits for food on busy nights, a mole that arrived cold, a cool welcome at the door and portions some find small for the price.
