About Uchi
The flagship sits in a small house on South Lamar, with a sushi bar of chefs working behind a glass fish case and tables packed close in warm wood rooms. The kitchen, founded by James Beard Award winner Tyson Cole, plays loose with Japanese tradition: wagyu carpaccio, sake-spiked tom kha, fried brussels sprouts and a fried-milk dessert sit next to nigiri and a ten-course tasting. The early happy hour, with its own omakase, is the best-value way in. It opens at 4 p.m. daily and runs to 10 p.m., or 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and tables go fast: one recent review found the room fully booked at 4:30 on a Sunday. Scores hold at 4.6 across more than 3,500 Google reviews. Sushi purists note that the draw is the atmosphere and invention rather than the strictest fish in town, which makes it more of a date spot than a quiet omakase. Dress is smart casual.
