About Smyth
Chefs John Shields and Karen Urie Shields run the city's only three-star kitchen from a West Loop room of timber posts, brick and warm pendant light, with the open kitchen in full view of the tables. The tasting menu arrives unannounced; the printed list of courses comes only at the end, and the produce, seafood and meat come from a small network of farmers, fishermen and makers around the country. Dinner runs Tuesday to Saturday from 5 to 9 PM, and bookings are gone weeks ahead. Wine pairings start around $245 per person and staff steer guests toward them firmly, which one recent reviewer flagged. The restaurant also lists itself as No. 1 on North America's 50 Best Restaurants. Reviews are largely glowing about pacing, detail and service, though a vocal minority find it short of its three-star billing. The Loyalist, a bar from the same owners known for its cheeseburger, sits downstairs.
